Shape Matters

This post is meant to help people know what condom shapes are out there on the market to find the right fit.

Another thing about condom fitting: SHAPE.

We've researched a lot about condom sizes and the importance of knowing the base width that matches your penis size (view dimensions table here).

Knowing condom shape is particularly relevant to guys who fit the width of regular condoms but still experience "problem spots", or find they are in between sizes. Some penises have a wider base width compared to head girth, hence a tapered fit at the bell end is required, rather than a classic straight walled condom. Shape should be factored in if you often experience the head on the condom being too tight or too loose. There are condoms out there with unique shapes to solve these fitting issues.

Many manufacturers now put on the condom box the base width and shape. To know what shape will suit you, the best thing to do is experiment with different styles. Condoms come in at least four main shapes: Straight walled, flare, large head, tapered head. Here I'll elaborate on each category and offer examples. Links to condoms are affiliate links that might earn me a few pennies if you buy online.

Straight Condoms

This is a traditional shape that has been around since at least the 1930s. They are usually 52 - 54mm wide from the opening all the way up to the teat. In other words, the base width and head width are the same.

Usually thin condoms are straight shaped. For example, most latex free condoms (which tend to be thinner than latex) such as Durex Avanti Real Feel, LifeStyles SKYN, and Trojan Supra are straight shaped. There is also LifeStyles Tuxedo and most ONE condoms come in classic shape. Japanese condoms are known for their thinnest and also are straight shaped, like Kimono MicroThin and Beyond Seven. (Fit tip: If you need a slightly tighter condom, Japanese condoms are a good choice as they are a little bit narrower than other leading brands' regular sizes).

Flare-shape Condoms

Flare shape means that the base width is a few millimeters wider than the mid-shaft and has a contoured, anatomically shaped head. More and more condoms are being built this way because of it's easy roll-on design. Flare shape is ideal for guys who want a bit more room at the head of the condom. Examples of condoms with this shape are: Durex's Enhanced PleasureExtra Sensitive, and Trojan's Her Pleasure, Pure Ecstasy, and LifeStyles Ultra THYN.

Large Headroom or "Comfort Fit"

There's a variety of shapes for larger headed condoms. Some are designed with a wider bell-shaped head (usually 56mm or more) that tapers in at the shaft. Examples of this include ONE Pleasure Dome, Kimono Maxx, LifeStyles KYNG and Durex PleasureMax.

For other "comfort shaped" condoms, it is less anatomically contoured but more "roomy". The width expands very wide along the shaft, tapering just at the base for a secure fit- similar to a light bulb shape. Almost all XL condoms are designed this way, such as Trojan Magnums and Durex XXL.

The condom with the largest head is LifeStyles Pleasure Tipp at 74mm wide! (see Condom Monologues size calculator for details).

There are also condoms out there that are designed with a "pleasure pouch" at the bell end- kind of like an extra foreskin -to add more stimulation for both partners, such as ONE Pleasure Plus.

Tapered Head, or "Close Fit"

These condoms can be designed either narrower or wider at the base and taper in at the head. Close fitting condoms are popular because many people like the tightness. For some, it makes their penis feel harder. This is a good choice for any guy who experiences the head of condoms being too loose.

Some condoms to choose from in this category include LifeStyles 3Sum, Snugger Fit and Atlas True Fit

Have you tried any of the condoms mentioned in this post? Let me know in the comments

Our Interview with Condom Monologues

Recently we spoke with Condom Monologues about the condom size research here. This interview acts as a summary of important conclusions on this blog; specifically, three things to consider about penis size surveys and how to determine the condom widths that fit your penis girth.

You can view a refurbishment of our penis-to-condom-circumference table. Condom Monologues also provides a useful condom size calculator of major (most USA) brands.

Erect penile length and circumference dimensions: a new internet survey - Need for a wider range of condom sizes

A new research study from the Indiana University research team was published online some time ago in the Journal of Sexual Medicine

Like many studies of penis size, they relied on men to report their penis size.
Then should we be concerned that men would lie about their size? No. Not really.
Dr herbenick answers:
"In fact, unlike most previous studies of self-reported penis size, they had good reason to report accurate data to us because we were using their size data to match them to a condom that was sized to fit their erect penis. If they reported a bigger-than-reality size to us, they would get a baggier condom. If they reported a smaller-than-reality size to us, the condom would be too tight."

  •  Measurement
It was performed using two erect penile measurement tools (one that used a letter-coding measurement system and a second that consisted of a centimeter-based measurement system) and detailed, illustrated directions about how to measure their erect penis, from the underside base and choosing the letter or numerical code that is “closest to the end of the head of your penis,” for the purposes of the study.

You will notice that the measurement is taken from the underside of the penis and therefore, can not be compared to the ususal measurement procedures.

  • Results
Below are the results obtained from this study and largely communicated to the media:
NB: values are in cm. Divide the value by 2.54 to get the equivalent in inches.

  • Discussion
I would like to spend some time about the concept of mean and standard deviation.
According to these raw results, one should expect that:
  1. 50% of men have an erect penis girth of less than 12.23cm.
  2. 84.13% of men have an erect penis girth of less than 14.46cm (mean + one standard deviation).
Provided that the data are normally distributed.
In fact this is absolutely not the case. Therefore, the standard deviation (2.23 cm) does not provide an accurate percentile rank. The real data give the following repartition:
  1. 50% of men have an erect penis girth of less than 12cm (this is obvious - the median was given).
  2. 84.13% of men have an erect penis girth of less than 13.5cm.
  3.  14.46cm would be at about the 93rd percentile!
The chart below give the detailed distribution:

  • Reminder
Normally distributed data looks like a bell curve. One has  to assume that penile dimensions data are not normally distributed because penile dimensions can not be smaller than a minimal value (in order to be physiologically functional), but the upper limit can be very high (before impacting negatively the functionality).
The direct consequence is that the theoretical bell curve symmetry is broken with more individuals below the mean and grouped in a smaller range while fewer individuals are above the mean and distributed in a wider range.
When graphed, this type of data looks like a bell that leans to the left.
In a effort to show it, I have gathered few "self-reported" studies, known to be "as serious as possible" scientifically. The collected data may not be as accurate as the one performed in a laboratory, but the phenomenon is more obvious as the number of tested individuals is important and therefore better reflects the broad range of penis sizes.
The selected studies are:
I have created a graph which compares these four studies to the few meaningful percentiles used when the curves are normally distributed:
  • the 50th percentile (the mean when it is normally distributed, the median otherwise)
  •  the 15.87th and 84.13rd percentile respectively representing the mean (M) - one standard deviation (SD) and the mean + one standard deviation when the distribution is normal
  • the 2.28th and 97.72nd percentile representing the M-2SD and M+2SD when the distribution is normal
  • the 99.87th percentile representing the M+3SD (the M-3SD was too small to mean anything) when the distribution is normal.
Graph: Cumulative percentile data of four erect penis circumference studies in cm compared to the usual normal standard deviations percentiles.

  • Conclusion
These data help showing once again the importance of having a wide choice of condom sizes, in order to better reflect the wide distribution of penis sizes.

According to the Herbenick study, as many as 15% of the male population has an erect penile girth of more than 13.5cm (5.3in). For this group, a normal sized condom is stretched 30%, which is really uncomfortable (for some, even painful) and accounts greatly for the high fail rate of condom usage.
The same can be said of the 15% of the male population whose erect penis girth is less than 10cm (4in). This group simply can not wear a normal condom without experiencing severe slippage.
Condom producers have a great responsibility in proposing the greatest possible range of condom sizes. Producers like Theyfit, My.Size or Coripa are more than welcome.

Sadly, sometimes, the governments are the cause of the lack of a wide choice. The best example is the US themselves which forbid the condoms to have an opening of more than 54mm (un-stretched circumference of 108mm). Let's hope this will change in the near future, thanks to people like Dr. Herbenick.

New penis survey from TheyFit: One size does NOT fit all!

Theyfit condoms reveal the largest, most accurate penis size survey data ever gathered.

You will most certainly be happy to discover how consistent these data are with the ones already gathered in this post, in this one, and in this one as well.

An anonymous sample of over 20,000 men shows that the UK ‘normal’ [size] is not 6 inches – it is nearly a whole inch less!
And whilst length is commonly the ‘measure of a man’, girth should not be overlooked as the survey reveals a staggering 4 inches difference when it comes to the circumference of the smallest and largest.

  • Average length is 5.1” (13cm), ranging from less than 3” up to more than 10”.
    • 26% of male population is less than 5" in Length,
    • 53% is between 5" and 6" in Length,
    • 21% is longer than 6" in Length.
  • Average circumference is 4.7” (12cm), with condom widths that fit girths of 3.5” up to 7.5”.

TheyFit’s size database was compiled by converting its unique "FitKit" measurements into metric sizes.
The FitKit provides each user with a randomised size code such as M17 or S77, so it’s not immediately obvious if someone needs a large or small condom.

Joe Nelson, founder of Theyfit comments, “Our anonymous data represent the most accurate survey of penis sizes ever collected. Previous studies have relied on self-reported measurements from men, leading to an issue of ‘size exaggeration’. But men buying our condoms are much less likely to do this for 2 reasons – firstly because they are parting with money for a custom fit condom and secondly because of our patented randomised size code system (rather than labels like small, medium and large), there’s simply less focus on whether someone is bigger or smaller – it’s all about getting a custom fit.”

I managed to get in touch with Joe Nelson himself, and he kindly answered to some of my further questions:

  • Was the circumference distribution normal (I believe you have less activity for standard sizes than for small or big sizes)?
Joe: Yes, quite a wide distribution. On the contrary, some of our happiest customers, based on feedback, are guys who have a nominal width requirement of 53 or 55mm, but love the fact that TheyFit are the correct length for them. Because we don’t market as “the condom for big or small guys” but instead as “the great condom for every guy” then I think this explains why guys of all sizes come to us, and enjoy us. Fact is, traditional condoms don’t fit nearly all guys, owing to being at least 7” long (but usually 205mm or 8.1”). 11 clinical studies dating back to 1993 identify fitting issues that 40-45% of guys experience, and they all think the number might be too low as many men don’t realise “it doesn’t fit” is even a valid complaint.

  • What is the standard deviation for circumference?
Joe: The s.d for nominal width was 6.4mm i.e 12.8mm circumference so almost exactly half an inch. We assume an average 18% latex stretch for optimum comfort, so you can expand it to circumference using that.

  • How did you build your data from numbers to cm (or in)?
Joe: [I] took a mid point for each letter/number. The critical part for accuracy is that the guys measuring are more likely to be honest. The midpoint methodology will cancel itself out over a large sample set like ours, from a mathematical perspective.

From all these information, we can draw some fair conclusions:
  • Average erect penis girth: 120mm +-15.1mm (4.7in +-0.59in)
  • Average erect penis length (do not press the pubic bone with your ruler): 130mm (5.1in).
  • About 10 to 20% condom stretch is tolerable for most guys (18% being the optimum for comfort with TheyFit comdoms), and above 25%, you are going to have a bad time. It's likely going to feel much too tight for you at the base.
  • Generally speaking, with store-bought condoms, above 135mm (5.3in) circumference you are going to be having issues with tightness and below 115mm (4.5in) a normal condom will likely be too loose and slip or fall off.

MY.SIZE: Find your perfect sized condom (or not)

Most of the condom companies produce one or few condom sizes, and anyway all the sizes are in a narrow range (from 49 to 57mm).

Some companies have decided to address this issue, by proposing a wide range of sizes:
  • Coripa produces 55 sizes,
  • TheyFit produces 95 sizes, with 12 nominal widths (from 41 to 69mm). See my review here.
MY.SIZE company decided to take an intermediate path by proposing 7 different nominal widths (from 47mm to 69mm), but only one length per width.

In order to choose, 3 easy steps:
  1. Measure your erect penis circumference (by downloading their measuring tape, if you wish, but you don't have to),
  2. Enter the obtained value,
  3. get your MY.SIZE condom size.

 Measure

Fill in your erect penis circumference (girth)

Get your MY.SIZE condom size

This is very simple, but there are few drawbacks:
  • The proposed condom size applies only to the MY.SIZE brand. Do not use this size for another brand. Each producer can and does use its own recipe, which modifies the latex and condom properties. See here for explanations.
  • You can not choose your condom length. And MY.SIZE correlates circumference and length. If you have a large and short penis, the proposed MY.SIZE condom will be large and long. Example: a penis between 13 and 14cm girth and 15cm long would wear a 64mm condom which is 22.3cm long! This does not seem right. Please find below the chart:

MY.SIZE is a great concept, but I am not sure it can fulfill the needs of most people, because of the pointed drawbacks.

On top of it, the calculations differ between the official website and some on-line shop and distributors.
Example: VINICO proposes a 57mm MY.SIZE condom for 130mm penis girth and a 60mm for a 135mm penis girth.
This kind of inconsistency is not good for the business as it does not give confidence.

TENGA fitting: the art of customer care (and masturbation)

Today we will focus on a Japanese company which is revolutionizing the sex toy universe for male.
We will not focus on the toys themselves or on the art of masturbation (I leave it to each individual's preference) but rather on the tool they developed on-line in order to help men choose the best fitting toy, based on their erect penile dimensions. Indeed, this gives a strong echo to the way condoms should be chosen:

TENGA fitting

The tool itself requires few information inputs:
  • the erect penis length,
  • the erect head diameter,
  • the erect shaft diameter,
  • plus two information directed towards masturbation taste:
    • the desired strength,
    • the feeling point (where you most enjoy stimulation).

By clicking on the Start Analysis button, you are given a list of the three toys supposed to better fit your needs:

TENGA has also created a nice blog:

I was particularly interested in their post about the 500 000 Japanese measured thanks to the TENGA fitting tool.

From the data gathered on the Japanese version, they created the “average erect penis” in Japan. Of course it can not be considered as a scientific study, but there may very well be some truth in it as the customers have absolutely no interest whatsoever in cheating.
NB: They plan to do the same with the international version, once they get enough data.
For fun, I used the tool to create the "average penises" of the different studies reported here:

Few superficial remarks:
  • I used the shaft diameter as the head diameter every time this data was missing.
  • Do not trust too much the length as it is almost impossible to know how it was recorded (pressing or not on the pubic bone...).
  • Japanese penises look more like a "mushroom" type penis, contrary to the Germans who have a glans diameter smaller than the shaft diameter.
  • Once again, the differences between these different studies are very small, and I am not even sure the differences are statistically significant.
To finish here is what the world average (based on these studies) would look like, as well as the perfect toy match:

1) Deep throat cup (US) 2) Soft tube cup and 3) Deep throat cup (soft)

To conclude, the TENGA website in general and the TENGA fitting in particular are funny, customer oriented and professional.
This is mainly lacking in the condom industry, even if some progress has been done lately - particularly TheyFit company, the best overall condom supplier out there. I would love to see so well designed condom websites.

TheyFit measurement fitting: great idea

After Condomerie, and other companies like Vinico, TheyFit created a tool to help people choosing the correct condom size.

3 easy steps:
  1. Measure your erect penis
  2. Enter the obtained values and get your condom size thanks to the TheyFit circumference code
  3. Fill in the code to order your fitting condoms

There is also a refinement. One can choose his own fitting style:

In order to know which erect penile girths correspond to each TheyFit girth code, you will find below a chart reporting, for each fitting style, and each TheyFit code:
  • The condom size (nominal lay flat width - or half circumference),
  • The minimum and maximum advised erect penis circumference
  • The corresponding condom stretch

One can easily notice that the linear relationship between condom and erect penis size is broken. This is explained by two main facts:
  1. the elastic modulus tends to decrease with the increase in quantity of latex (when the condom size increases, the condom stretches more easily).
  2. TheyFit modifies its latex formula (recipe) depending on the condom circumference.

This has been brilliantly explained by Gerofi:

The actual pressure and force on the penis depends on the relative circumferences of the penis and condom, the thickness of the rubber, and its elastic modulus.

In the normal domain of use, the latex elastic modulus can be considered as constant, which in turn, gives a linear relationship between condom and penis girth: the force to apply is directly proportional to the increase in circumference.

What TheyFit does is input ammonia to the formula to decrease the force to apply (and thus increase the elasticity of the condom) whenever they feel it is necessary. Other molecules can be added to get different effects.

Therefore, CondomSizeAndFacts has only one advice to give: whenever a producer gives its own instructions for use, concerning the relationship between condom and penis size, follow them. Otherwise, you can use the data collected in this blog to pre-select your concom size. In fine, only trying it will allow a final decision.

Anyway, I spotted some data which look like some inconsistencies: the 64mm condom size is proposed to only 1% of the population, the 69mm one to only 0.02% (a company would not sell products representing 0.02% of its market, unless it reaches its economical lot size)... Either the erect penis girth data are erroneous or there is some important piece of information missing. TheyFit data would shade some light on it, but I am not sure they would be willing to share it.

To conclude, a great tool, a nice success, but a few glitches which deserve to be ironed up... Or better explained!

TheyFit company is certainly one of the best company in the world, thanks to their underlying concept (supply the largest choice of sizes), to their great will to communicate and to participate in the information of the population about the importance to have proper fitting condoms.

They definitely deserve the best possible success.

Condomerie perfect fit tool: sized to fit condoms

Many people have been waiting for such a tool for a (very) long time. Condomerie finally did it: they created a tool to help people determine their correct condom size based on their erect penis dimensions.

Condomerie perfect fit: sized to fit condoms

3 easy steps:
  1. Measure your erect penis
  2. Enter the obtained values and get your condom size thanks to the CAS index
  3. Check the different advised condoms

You can enter your erect penis circumference and length either by using the slides or by typing it in. For the ones who are not used to the international system of measure, a conversion tool in inches is proposed:

Once done, you can read your result:

For the ones not used to the CAS index, a shortcut is proposed:

The condomerie shop proposes different brands corresponding to your calculated size:

The tool is very impressive. It gives very accurate results.
However, one could notice that Condomerie took a bit safer approach than what was proposed in this blog (The condom size wizard). Each CAS size is proposed for a stretch percentage between 15% and 21% while the condom size wizard takes a more comfortable approach (between 10 and 15%).

Anyway, congratulations to the Condomerie shop. May they carry on participating in education for many more years.

Correct condom fit confirmed by condom industry

On its web site, Kimono condoms company created a pretty nice condom information page. Among other subjects, the condom size issue is nicely treated. This is rare enough in the condom industry to be quoted:

Average Penis Size
Penis Length: Many studies report the average erect penis length is about 6 inches. Anywhere from 5 inches to 7 inches is a common erect penis length.
Penis Girth: Many studies report the average girth of an erect penis is about 4.5 inches. Anywhere from 4 inches to 5 inches is a common girth for an erect penis.

Condom Size & Penis Size
IMPORTANT: to prevent slipping, the condom girth should always be smaller than the penis girth (circumference)
Small condoms
– recommended for a penis under 5 inches in length, or under 4 inches in girth (condom girth less than 3.9 inches)
Standard condoms – recommended for a penis between 5-7 inches in length, or 4-5 inches in girth (condom girth 4.0 - 4.39 inches)
Large condoms – recommended for a penis over 7 inches in length, or over 5 inches girth (condom girth 4.40+ inches)

On top of it, they provide an interesting condom size chart whose data where obtained from product purchased in the market place:

A few remarks though:
- Concerning the large size condom, also called magnum condoms, Kimono condoms takes a safe 13% ratio between the erect penis circumference and the condom girth (2 times the condom size). This is consistent with the data reported in this blog.

- The "legendary" trojan magnum condom is not so mythical after all (no pun intended). This is a large condom among others. Somebody with a 5in erect penis girth can wear a magnum condom (be careful, to prevent slipping, to choose a tight enough condom).

- For the standard and small size condoms, always ensure that your erect penis circumference is quite bigger than the condom girth.

The average erect penis girth may be even smaller than previously thought

As demonstrated previously,
the average erect penis circumference of western men is 121.67mm +- 13.34mm (4.79in +- 0.53in).
It actually may be significantly lower.

The condom requirements were disclosed during an eight-month study conducted by the Institute of Condom Consultancy, based in Singen, southern Germany. The purpose of the survey was to educate teenagers about the importance of effective contraception.
10 477 men from 25 European Union member countries were therefore surveyed on their penis length and girth.

The European erect penis girth averaged around 117mm (4.61in)

This is slightly below the results from scientific studies. This is surprising as usually the self-reported surveys give significantly higher results. For example the French came out on top with a claimed average girth of 136.3mm. Jan Vinzenz Krause, the institute's director, refused to comment on how honest he thought the Frenchmen had been in reporting the data. Clearly some wishful thinking or even lies were involved in this result.I invite you to follow this very sensitive and funny link:
http://www.thesniper.us/?tag=condom-sizes

To conclude, depending on the country and its culture, people may be more or less honest in reporting their actual penis size and if the average ends up below the one from scientific studies, it could reflects that some bias inherent to these studies have been eliminated. One could even say that the true average may be even below 117mm...

World average

This is more tricky. But one could take into account the few scientific studies realised in Asia, which represents at least half the world population.

Here is a chart reporting the main studies in the world concerning the average erect penis circumference (girth):
NB: The different kinds of measurement method (self-report after training, pharmacologically induced erections...) are equivalent as demonstrated brillantly:

The world average erect penis circumference is anywhere between 114 and 118mm (4.49 and 4.65in).

No reliable data from Africa were found. But from the Kinsey data, it appears that the difference between Caucasian and African averages could be neglected.

The Condom Size Wizard

The Condom Size Wizard or how to find the right condom size
Welcome to the Condom Size Wizard, a tool to determine the best fitting condom to your erect penis.

The condom size is the width when laid flat. Therefore the condom size corresponds to half the condom circumference.

As discussed here, Determination of a correct measuring system, the choice of the correct condom size depends greatly on the girth, or circumference, of the erect penis.

Please provide your erect penis circumference (girth):
The diameter of the erection is therefore: mm or inches

Depending on its size, a condom will be more or less stretched with this erect penis circumference. Please find below a chart reporting the stretch percentage depending on the most common condom sizes:

condom size (mm) 45 47 49 52 53 54 57 60 64 69
Condom stretch % % % % % % % % % %

As one can understand, not all condom sizes will fit a given erect penis circumference. As a matter of fact, the condom stretch should be between 10% and 20%, a good compromise between comfort and safety.

The Condom Size Wizard (or how to find the right condom size)
Condom Best Fit and other possible fits

Please provide your erect penis circumference (girth) to find out the perfect condom fit. Then you can select the perfect condom fit to see on the last list the other possible condom fits.

NB: this tool is only a general guideline. In case a condom company provides specific instructions about the condom and erect penis size correspondence, please follow them.

Also try out this Condom Size Calculator to see what exact condoms you should buy.
